Our Post-deliberation Charge

Today I completed my 1st experience serving as a juror. It was a criminal case. 1 defendant, 6 victims, 35 charges. It's been 8 gut-wrenching days and 7 restless nights. After we delivered the verdict, we were shaken and silent. Even though we were resolute in our decisions, there was no decision we could make that didn’t bring more pain to so many lives already affected by the chain of events that led us all to the courtroom.

On my way home I was wallowing in the aftermath, letting my mind wander through the entire process...it was then I remembered the number 12. And how 12 of us did something amazing and these days is pretty rare.

This is what we did.

As soon as deliberations began, we decided to take an anonymous straw poll on the main charges: before we even talk about it, do we think the defendant was guilty or not guilty?

The vote was split 6/6 on almost every charge and my chest fell. I was thinking things like "hung jury" and "I'll never see the sun again."

But then the amazingness happened.

12 strangers talked and listened. Points were argued passionately, received openly, and responded to honestly and respectfully. No one raised their voice. Everyone was heard. When someone was struggling to address the really difficult and sensitive parts of the case it was met with with empathy. No one's words were considered less important or less meaningful than anyone else's in the room.

We considered all the evidence (facts) and shared them through the lens of our beliefs (opinions) with the belief that everyone else's are valid. (Speaking of evidence, there wasn't a lot to go on for most of the charges.) Back and forth, up and down, inside and out we kept working together towards our goal of unanimity.

It took us more than 16 hours to get there. Those 16 hours contained some of my proudest moments of being a US Citizen and a resident of Philadelphia, the birthplace of the country that gave us this incredibly powerful way to engage with and support your fellow community members.

I wish more conversations in our country were conducted the same way the 12 of us did these past few days. It was tough but it was rewarding. It took a long time but it was worth it. 12 open minds gave freely and received fully.

That is all.

Phil Collins made television awesome for 60 minutes......well, kinda....

Question: What do John Candy, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, Henry Mancini, Barbara Mandrell, Paul Shaffer, John Travolta, The Ultimate Warrior, Vanessa Williams, Gilbert Gottfried, Don Johnson, Bruce Willis, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Jefferey Tambor, have in common?

Answer: They all agreed to be a part of this circus cheese called “Seriously...Phil Collins” that aired in 1989 to promote his…But Seriously album tour because they love and adore Phil Collins so much and didn’t want him to look like the only ass clown in the program.

Observe....

(Please note Part 4 is currently trapped inside Adele's butthole. Apologies for the inconvenience.)

Do you know any one that would do this for you?

I didn't think so.

Like I said, this is total butt cheese television; however, what makes it totally awesome is that there is not a trace of egotism to be found. Collins just bumbles along through this much in the same way I imagine my dad or my 5th grade teacher would do. In all my years of being a fan, I have never seen him give off an air of self-centeredness or entitlement, and this cornballsack TV show shines an even brighter light on his unconditional humility.

However, let me be clear in saying that Phil Collins should never do a TV special ever again, although if he did it would be a bazillion times more awesome than anything on right now.

Phil Collins: a humble soul who doesn't take himself seriously and is a better actor than John Travolta.

Fact: Adopting a Greyhound Is Probably the Best Damn Idea You'll Ever Have

Do you know what month it is? Of course you don't because you've been overdosing on Netflix or waiting for that click-bait on your Facebook newsfeed to load. So I’ll tell you right now because you can’t seem to stop reading this sentence that it is greyhound adoption month! It is time to ADOPT ALL THE GREYHOUNDS!

I have adopted 3 so far in my life and that has definitely made said life so much better than if I adopted a ham or a bag of shoes.

Greyhounds are a type of dog that come from a planet where it is tradition to sleep 45 hours a day, eat expensive grain-free brown pebbles, and make hair that permanently attaches to your clothes. Sometimes they run really fast for 4 to 8 seconds and always believe that it is best to lie on everything that is not the floor.

Now before you go out and adopt a few of these magnificent creatures, you may be inclined to put “greyhound” in the Googles to see if the World Wide Web has a pamphlet available to tell you more about them. I can tell you right now there are a lot of fascinating and fun facts* like “greyhounds are the world’s fastest couch potato” and “greyhounds are not all grey, ya dingus” and “never leave a greyhound off leash, especially if there is rabbit playing in traffic nearby” and “adopting an adult, retired racing greyhound means you don’t have to deal with all that fucking puppy bullshit."

So in addition to all the great brochures you can browse on your computer machine, I thought I’d share some little known facts about these dog wonders based on my own experience.

1. Greyhounds have rubber bones.

2. Greyhounds are creative sleepers.

3. Greyhounds put up with all kinds of stupid shit.

4. Greyhounds are good at hiding.

5. Greyhounds are giant cats.

5. Greyhounds have human-like tongues.

*If you have the time and space to open your home to a retired racing greyhound or just want to learn more, please check out these links or ask me any questions by tapping your computer machine buttons inside the comment boxes provided below.

There are hundreds, maybe thousands of greyhound adoption agencies around the world that take in greys after retirement and these are the 2 organizations I have personally used for adoptions and their websites also offer a lot of great info about what to expect when bringing a greyhound home (besides shit-tons of laughter and happiness):

Awesome fact about Phil Collins #2: Musicians need him to make them sound good

Before you read this, did you read Awesome fact about Phil Collins #1? No?! Go read it now! I'll wait.

From left to right: Dude in Black Shirt, Dude in Black Shirt’s Boyfriend, Dude Trying To Hold In A Second Fart, A Photobomber, Some Chins, Dude Smelling That Other Dude’s First Fart, and PHIL COLLINS
Phil Collins has been sent to this good Earth for many things, I’m sure, but the one I care about the most is his mission to be the best musician in the entire galaxy.

He has proven this time and time again by making recorded sounds of joy on many albums and live sounds of ecstasy in concert halls around the world with his long-time band Genesis and his own band. All of these endeavors have produced platinum albums, #1 singles, and hundreds of sold out arenas---so it comes as no surprise that a few other musicians hanging around would beg for a just a few drops of his pure awesomeness.

It all began in 1970 when Collins was only 19 and asked to play percussion on George Harrison’s “The Art of Dying” from his album, All Things Must Pass. Not only was this the best song on the album, it was also the best song to be released in 1970.

In 1974 Genesis decided to pay their producer Brian Eno for his services on their album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in Phil Collins drum sessions for Eno’s album, Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy). Later Eno may or may not have said, “Genesis gave me the choice between a Lamborghini stuffed with £100,000,000 and Phil Collins drumming. I didn’t even have to think ONCE about that!”

He impressed Eno so much, he was asked to drum again on his albums Another Green World and Before and After Science. Listen to this to know why (and try not to soil yourself in the process):

Collins went on to collaborate---I’m sorry, I mean help out----other musicians with his drums, sprinkling the pure awesomeness wherever it was needed. A few notable saves include: David Crosby’s Thousand Roads, Paul McCartney’s Press to Play and Mike Oldfield’s QE2.

And because he’s such a dude, he helped out his ex-Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel on his album Peter Gabriel (3) and would play live with him from time to time, because let’s face it – it’s the right thing to do and the Universe needs it.

When Collins wasn’t drumming for himself or Genesis or other musicians in crisis, he also somehow found time to produce a few albums. He’s produced Frida Lyngstad’s (ABBA singer) first album, Something’s Going On and Eric Clapton’s albums Behind the Sun and August. And of course on all of these albums he produced he also drummed and/or sang because as the saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out.” Collins also toured with Clapton in ’86 for some shits and giggles after the release and tour of his multi-platinum, multi-eargasm album Invisible Touch with Genesis.

I am sure there are other examples out there of his grace and goodwill towards musical humanity, but I need to go to bed now so I can thank God I got to live another day to hear Phil Collins music. If I missed any other notable collaborations, please share via a comment below. But for now I leave you with a brief video clip of him blessing all ears that can hear with Brand X---which his career with is an Awesome Fact About Phil Collins unto itself.

Phil Collins: YOU’RE WELCOME, musicians.

Break Like the Wind!

As part of my never-ending quest to save myself from getting sucked into the United States “Healthcare System” and breaking yet another chair in public with my fat ass (up to 3 so far) I am on a new mission to get in a better shape.

"Party Platter" is a shape, right?
Last year I went vegetarian and that alone has helped tremendously. Thanks to a diet centered around fruits and vegetables, I now have the happiest colon in the world. And according to my husband, the most productive one.

But even though I feel good, not all vegetarian food is healthy, and that + my life-long sugar addiction still turns my “skinny jeans” into “sausage casings.” So I somehow gotta burn off the booze and chocolate-covered cheesy burrito pizzas I regularly throw down my neck so I don’t make my Spanx and my heart cry so much.

I have attempted “exercise" before, and even though John Oates was an amazing workout partner, it didn’t last and I think that is because 1) the 2012 Hall and Oates tour and 2) I didn’t have a tangible goal in place. It’s so easy to slide into the deep ranch dressing-filled valley of bad habits when you aren’t made accountable for your insatiable desire for naps over laps.

So this, the Year of Our Lord 2016, I am going to do the Bike MS: City to Shore (150 miles on my bicycle) September 24 and 25, and the Philly Half Marathon (13.1 miles on my feet) on November 20. That’s GOALS people! Stupid, crazy fucking GOALS!

I have proudly worn the diaper shorts soaked in Vaseline for the City to Shore ride 6 times now, so I know what to expect and what I need to do to train (tip: asking all your friends if they have any leftover Vicodin from a tooth extraction is KEY.) But this half marathon is all new to me. As is the concept of “running."

I’ve been using this app that claims to get you running a 5k (3.1 miles) in as little as 9 weeks. So far it’s great — I’ve been on week 2 for the past 10 weeks now.

The difference between cycling and running is that when I cycle I go fast and far and I don’t trip. And when I run I wish I was on a bicycle. I’ve got Double D-Bags* up top and a Wide Load on the bottom (aka, The Lady Stabson Barren Cavern) which makes me better suited for sports like hula-hooping and being a floatation device than running. This in itself makes me move slow but what is really frustrating is that I can’t get above a 4 mph pace because anything faster causes highly volatile thigh friction.

Lady Stabson clocks in at 6 mph and provides heat
for the entire neighborhood
But despite the fact I look like a giant cave troll chasing a balloon just out of reach when I’m running, I am committed to staying on track with my training and eventually completing this half marathon. Hopefully between now and November I will slim down to a svelte Uruk Hai and my heart will stay intact just long enough for me to fling myself over the half marathon finish line.

I will share my progress (read: whine about side stitches and my low lung capacity) here throughout the months leading up the events so stay tuned for more. The next phase in my training is totally reworking my running playlist. Needs more Devin Townsend as I can still hear myself wheezing over the usual David Coverdale.

In the meantime, I am raising money for the Philadelphia/New Jersey chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (I’m not riding that ridiculous distance for nothing!) so please visit my fundraising page and do something good today to balance out the bad from reading this.

Forever Your Eye of the Tiger,

Lady Stabson
xoxo

Awesome fact about Phil Collins #1: He cared more about Ethiopian famine than all the other performers at Live Aid combined

In July 1985, some dudes I have never heard of before (because I’m an American under 40) called Bob Geldolf and Midge Ure hosted a music festival called Live Aid to benefit Ethiopian famine relief. This festival took place in London AND Philadelphia at the same time, and according to Wikipedia, “it was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time: an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched the live broadcast.”

Across the 2 concerts, there were over 60 performers/bands. But only 1 performed at BOTH concerts. This is of course Phil Collins, as he was the only performer who possessed not only the talent to deliver an entertaining performance in both the UK and USA but also the stamina of a bull elk in heat.

Here’s how it went down:

Not only did Phil Collins perform in the UK and the US, he also performed in more than 1 set in the US of A. He did a set of his own awesome stuff "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" and "In the Air Tonight" on the piano to give his drums a well-deserved rest….

and THEN played drums for Eric Clapton…

and THEN played drums again for a Led Zepplin reunion set….

And it is with this Led Zepplin performance in mind, I will bring this awesome fact to conclusion.

If you watched the video above, you can form your own opinions about the performance but according to many critics and fans who witnessed it as it was happening the entire Led Zepplin set at Live Aid was a hot mess (like most band reunion shows, I’m afraid). Jimmy Page blames Phil Collins for the weak performance and claims he ruined the show. Regardless of the fact this claim is coming from a grown man named “Jimmy,” he and Robert Plant were unrehearsed and clearly should have never gotten on the stage together again. Also, SEE ABOVE.

Collins said in an interview in Spin Magazine: "They weren't very good and I was made to feel a little uncomfortable by the dribbling Jimmy Page. If I could have walked off, I would have - but then we'd be talking about why Phil Collins walked off from Led Zeppelin. So I just stayed there and bit my tongue."

Phil Collins: a classy and modest humanitarian who humors awkwardly fading rock bands.

Happy Ferris Wheel Day!

Hello Sweetums! I hope you are all having a wonderful day, the most magically saccharine of all the days, Ferris Wheel Day. A holiday that truly warrants no celebration or acknowledgement beyond the 90 seconds of your life it suspends you above a rolling fairground of carnies, clowns, and children vomiting into cotton candy.

Another holiday very similar to this is Valentine’s Day, a time designated to force you to formally engage in or recognize THE IMPORTANCE OF ROMANCE. Whether you have a terrifically boring time on a Ferris Wheel or a terrifically boring time at Bed, Bath, and Beyond picking out a new bed in a bag with your fiancé, there really isn’t a point in assigning a specific day to celebrate either. The point is to commemorate life’s terrifically boring, scary, sweet, vertigo-induced, and yes, even romantically-induced moments, every day.

So, you have probably figured out by now I forgot to buy my husband a Ferris Wheel Day AND Valentine’s Day cards.

But in my defense, I really do believe that setting aside a special day for giant, round death traps and giant, heart-shaped crap is not necessary because I inject sweet, sweet romance into my poor, poor partner all the time. He is regularly regaled with smooth seductions such as,

"No, my love, that wasn't Dora.”*

“Darling, can you massage some triamcinolone cream into the excemza patch on my back?"

"Hey baby, how about we head upstairs
and binge watch Michael Palin's Around
the World in 80 Days?"
“Baby, we gotta go to Walgreens, Dora* ate my mouthguard."

"I am weak in the knees, it feels like I've got butterflies in my stomach and my heart aches. I think it might be cancer."

“Honeybuns, what is a 4 letter word for "upholstered item?”**

“Sweetie, can you help me get out of this dress? The zipper is caught on my Spanx."

“Sorry dear, I’ll go brush my teeth."

“Let’s never get matching tattoos."

See, I am a natural romantic! Every day is like opening a box of chocolates. Too bad my husband prefers cake.

Thanks for putting up with me, lovey. Too many wrongs do make a right! XOXO

*Dora.

Why Spring Hates Your Guts Right Now

It's finally Spring here in beautiful Philadelphia -- the weather is warm, the sun is shining and I am FUCKING MISERABLE.

This beginning of Spring is like a $7.99 All-You-Can-Eat seafood dinner from a restaurant in Tulsa, OK that Mother Nature ate on a Saturday night after binging on moonshine from a homeless man's boot. It is a pool of sick that gets sprayed all over everything which I am forced to inhale and then hork back up again in the form of lime-green phlegm bombs.

Usually this attack only lasts for a few days, and I can easily medicate my way through it before the weekend. But this year Mother Nature's hot vomit slurry has gone deep into my breathing tubes and for almost 2 weeks now I've done nothing but lie around in my own lazy filth, but THIS TIME it's more difficult to breathe and more painful to verbally complain about it all.

Being in this unusually prolonged New England vortex of snot prompted me to find out exactly why this year has been different than others, and I learned there are 3 main reasons and, surprisingly, none of them seem to be my fault:

1. Spring took its fucking time getting here: this past winter was very cold and very wet, like a penguin prom queen. This delay in warmer weather caused a delay in the release of pollen from some types of trees that would typically perform their spooging rituals much earlier in the season. So what we have right now is every damn boy tree you can imagine encircling us in an epic pollen circle-jerk.

2. Your town is one big flora sausage party: According to weather.com, "when it comes to planning parks and greenspaces, many cities opt for male trees over female trees since they create less mess -- female trees produce seeds that often fall to the ground, making cleaning the sidewalks and grassy areas a pain. Whereas male trees don't, instead they produce pollen." THIS IS THE MOST SEXIST THING I HAVE READ TODAY.

3. That global warming phenomenon that is caused by the same people who deny its existence and seems to be RUINING EVERYTHING: According to many scientists who appear to be smarter than me, the increased prevalence of warmer climates and carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere are causing higher concentrations of pollen explosions everywhere. So warmer weather + more Co2 = dirty tree porn. Also, not only is the weather generally warmer this Spring, recently there have been ridiculous fluctuations in temperature within just a 24-hour period which causes human immune systems to spin out of control and therefore express more severe allergic reactions to the aforementioned tree facials.

This explanation for why this is happening to me satisfies my need to blame something or someone for all my problems, but it doesn't actually make me feel any better. I've been trying all kinds of medication cocktails and I think I've finally got the right combination:

I hope you are not suffering like I am, but if you are, let me know how you are getting through this and if you are interested in helping me build a hermetically sealed cave to live in next Spring. Or maybe I'll just walk around in a giant condom suit lubricated with antihistamines.

There are just some things I refuse to put into my body

Dear People and Other Life Forms Reading This,

In my last blog post about 3 months ago I said I was going to get back into updating this blog on a more regular basis, which in Lady Stabson-speak means I will do the exact opposite.

I had good intentions though like I do every year. All I can see at the start of every January is my life floating through a big magical cloud of becoming AWESOME in EVERYTHING. However, like every January - March, my reality slobbers inside a big fart cloud of storing fat and hibernating and then I spend April - December hating myself for not being AWESOME but it’s OK I’ll be awesome next year.

But there was one blip of change that occurred somewhere between hiding in a sack of carbs and hiding under a mountain of blankets: I got off the pot and decided to become a vegetarian. I’ve spent the past 20 years or so wearing dietary flip-flops; I was vegetarian then flexitarian then omnivore then baretarian (strictly Slim Fast and Cliff bars) then around again. And again. But now I’ve decided to fully commit to being a vegetarian. Even if I’m drunk and it’s 2am and I’m outside Jim’s Steaks on South Street.

Since I’ve made this decision, I’ve been getting asked “why don’t you eat meat anymore?” a lot to which I really want to just answer “Because” because I’m a super lazy bastard. But apparently that is not good enough so I’ve written this post here so the next time I’m asked that question I can just say, “Go read my blog” because I’m a super lazy bastard that can also type words.

So here it is, 4 reasons I just say no to bacon, burgers, chicken nuggets and fish sticks:

1. Nothing cunt punches Mother Earth harder than eating animals.
All the hybrid car driving, plastic water bottle recycling, composting, and LED lightbulbs in the world is not going to save the planet because farm animals are just going to shit all over it.

Typically...
  • Just 1 pig factory farm produces 7.2 million pounds of shit a year.
  • Just 1 chicken factory facility produces 6.6 million pounds of shit a year.
  • Just 1 cow feedlot produces 344 million pounds of shit a year.

In the US alone, the factory farming industry produces 87,000 POUNDS OF SHIT PER SECOND. 1 pork farm, Smithfield, makes enough pig shit as the entire human population of both California and Texas.

So imagine you are in California or Texas and everyone’s toilet disappeared and everyone had to shit and piss in a huge pit all day, every day, for all of time. Doesn’t that sound appetizing?

But you might be asking yourself, so what? Poop is great, it’s natural waste; it can be used as fertilizer! Well perhaps that was the case over 50 years ago, but since then our hunger for animals and desire not to pay a lot for it kicked that fact in the shithole.

Basically, the demand for meat + desire for low prices = farmers perpetually cramming large numbers of animals in tiny spaces. Which leads to assloads of toxic waste.

Factory farms typically store animal poop in huge, open-air lagoons, often as big as several football fields, which are prone to leaks and spills. It’s like a giant un-flushed toilet in a big open dirt hole filled with ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, cyanide, nitrous oxide, and phosphorus. (That’s why it’s called SHIT, people). And it’s so toxic to every living thing around it because these animals are typically fed cheap, genetically modified grains that their bodies don’t digest so well. Think about the toxic cloud of ass fumes you’ve emitted after that trip to Taco Bell.

And according to PETA, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide together cause the vast majority of global warming. Producing a little more than 2 pounds of beef causes more greenhouse-gas emissions than driving a car for three hours and uses up more energy than leaving your house lights on for the same period of time.

If you jumped into this you would die...if the gasses from the manure didn’t cause asphyxiation first.
Producing 1 pound of beef takes an estimated 1,581 gallons of water, which is roughly as much as the average American uses in 100 showers.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has estimated that 70% of land formerly supporting Amazon rainforests has been turned over to chicken grazing.

About 75% of the antibiotics fed to farm animals end up undigested in their piss and shit. Through this waste, the antibiotics may contaminate crops and waterways and ultimately be ingested by humans….which leads me to my next point….

2. I don't want give my body and wallet over to the United States healthcare system.
I don’t believe any country’s healthcare system is without its drawbacks, but the US system as it stands today is mostly comprised of drawbacks. From my own perspective and based on my own access to the healthcare (employer-based coverage now, then Medicare when I get really old and body parts rot), I have absolutely no desire now or in the future to get anywhere NEAR that hot mess if I can help it. It’s expensive, it’s time consuming, oh and being sick is pretty shitty.

So there are several strategies I employ to help me avoid getting sucked into the Health System Vortex of Hell:
  • Avoid eating animals
  • Avoid cigarettes
  • Avoid food-like substances (e.g., “processed” foods that contain made-up bullshit ingredients and fuck with your cells)
  • Binge on black coffee
  • Binge on wine
  • Begrudgingly force myself to exercise
  • Begrudgingly force myself to eat less sugar
  • Fill my body with as many whole grains, fruits, and vegetables as possible
I do all of these things in the hopes it will all morph my body into an impenetrable shield against hospital gowns, medical bills, and vomiting for other reasons than bullet point 5.

I’m pretty sure most people understand the health benefits of all of those points above, except for maybe the “avoid eating animals” one. I can hear it now — "Don’t you need protein? And iron? Isn’t meat a part of a balanced diet?” Well, yes you need protein and iron and all kinds of vitamins and minerals and shit like that in your diet but it can be very well balanced without the meat. Understand that when you eat an animal, you are eating so much more than its flesh: animals bred for food in factory farms (which represent 99% of all animals bred for food) are genetically mutated shadows of their ancestors--pumped full of antibiotics, covered in feces, and when they are ultimately slaughtered after a “life” of the most unnatural circumstances you can think of, their flesh is further processed for your eating pleasure. Chickens and turkeys are injected with salt and water solutions (“broths”) to give them what we believe to be that “real chicken/turkey taste” and given chlorine baths (remember the feces part?) Cow and pig meat are slathered in ammonia and bleach to make sure you don’t get e coli.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds like the OPPOSITE of “nourishment" and extremely disgusting and the last thing I want in my gut and in my cells. I will pass on this grilled piece of chemically-induced bad Juju that will likely make me resistant to antibiotics when I’m 60, please---I've got enough problems already. I am sure my fair Eastern European descent skin that has been sunburned more times than I can count and my family histories of disease will likely betray me into that Healthcare Vortex, but if I have the chance to lower my risk any way I can I'll take it.

There’s loads of data out there on the health benefits of being a vegetarian, but because I assume you are a lazy bastard like me and don’t feel like looking it up, here are a few from the American Dietetic Association (ADA):

According to the ADA, vegetarians are at lower risk for developing these jerk-off conditions that will keep your body and wallet tied to the doctor’s office:
  • Heart disease
  • Colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension

3. Because I have a nervous-system I don’t like being hurt or tortured so I assume neither do animals.

AWWWWWWWW SO ADORBS!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, well that sucks.
My compassion and concern for the well-being of dogs, cats, ferrets and the Great American Bald Eagle does not differ from pigs, cows, chicken, and fish. It doesn’t make sense to me say that dogs and cats deserve to be treated better than pigs and cows. Just because I choose not to have a chicken, cow, pig or tunafish live with me in my house doesn’t mean it deserves any less of my compassion than my dopey dog that eats popcorn with me on the couch.

This is my greyhound Dora. She was exploited for 4 years in the racing industry, living in a tiny cage 23 hours a day before she was rescued by me and is now forced to sleep on a couch 23 hours a day and run free in a yard while I pick up her poop.
(See what I did there?)

All creatures, even us asshat human-types, should be able live a good life. And when I say "good" I mean "good" within the natural life of that species, not what humans think is good for themselves in a self-serving kind of way. That's the whole fucking point of being alive for fucks sake. It just came down to one question for me: why do we love one kind of animal but eat another?

Eating animals always weighed on my conscience and it wasn’t until I started doing more research into how animals are turned into food that I realized the emotional disturbance I had about it was centered on an attempt to suppress the emotional connection humans have with animals by re-naming animals once they become food (or conversely, forget they were living, intelligent creatures with feelings in the first place). We don't eat cows and pigs, we eat steak and bacon. But for me, I can’t ignorantly hide behind the semantics anymore even though I've tried the delightfully sounding and tasting "veal" and "seafood.”

It's a wonderful thing for me now to look at an animal and have that clear conscience.* Definitely leaves a better taste in my mouth.

At this point I thought about posting 1 of the thousands of videos showing animal abuse and exploitation on factory farms but decided on this clip from the Daily Show instead so you can laugh WHILE you look animal abuse.

And at this point I’d like to point out that most animals that are turned into food are smarter than your pet (or at least my pet who eats her own poop):
  • Pigs can demonstrate the capacity for abstract representation— in one study, pigs were successfully trained to play video games with their snouts. They are also smarter than 3 year old humans.
  • Chickens have sophisticated memories, and can pass information generationally. They also know how to deceive one another and have the ability to delay satisfaction in order to receive larger rewards. I would argue this also makes them smarter than a 3 year old human.
  • Fish form monogamous relationships, recognize one another as individuals, have very good long-term memories, and have “cultural traditions” for feeding, schooling, resting, and mating.

4. I believe this awesome planet was created by a God who would like us not act like a bunch of selfish twats that live in a fucking frat house.
As a daughter of Eve and a friend in Jesus, I believe we are all responsible for being stewards of this world (see point 1) and all life contained within it, including animals (see point 3). And today I believe the way animals are turned into food does not honor the gift of this world and the sanctity of life itself. For example, more than 1 BILLION PEOPLE in the world do not have enough to eat. Meanwhile, McDonalds opens about 5 new restaurants a day. FACT: It takes 6-26 calories of grain to make 1 calorie of animal flesh. You don’t need a degree in mathematics to figure out that the more grain that is fed to animals, the less there is left to feed people. In 2000, the United Nations Commission on Nutrition Challenges of the 21st Century said that unless there are some big-ass changes made, 1 BILLION CHILDREN will be permanently handicapped over the next 20 years due to not getting enough calories. According to the commission, the 1st step to avoiding this situation is to encourage more a more sustainable diet of grains, fruits, and vegetables. Based on what I know about Jesus he would be pretty pissed-off half the world was unnecessarily going hungry and sick because the other half of the world wants a $.99 cheeseburger.

But I don’t believe that religious beliefs or lack thereof is an excuse for being douche-nozzles to animals and turning our ecosystem into a shit-stain--whether you believe it was all created by God, a ball of gas, space aliens, or a mystical orb named Bob doesn't fucking matter. What you DO while you are here matters so much more than what you believe. But I’m not here to judge or tell you what to do, of course. ("The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.” —Romans 14:3)

So here’s what I’ve concluded about eating animals:

I looked at my plate. I thought about it. I asked questions. I found answers. I made a choice.

Bon Appetit,

*except for snakes. When I look at those scary motherfuckers I want to run away.

By the way, I didn’t pull all these fancy facts out of my asshole — unless otherwise cited, they are all from 2 really great books you should read immediately: Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer (2009; Back Bay Books) and The Food Revolution by John Robbins (2011, Conari Press).

Happy 2014! And 2015!

Happy New Years, everyone! Wow, I can't believe I haven't posted here at all since 2013, but it's understandable since I'm pretty sure 2014 didn't really happen thanks to an elaborate prank pulled on me by Netflix.

However, 2015 is a REAL YEAR full of REALLY REAL REALNESS. Really.

So let's get real for a moment: I am really going to put words on this blog more often in 2015 than in the alleged "2014." For reals. And when I say "for reals" it means it WILL HAPPEN, unlike my New Year's Resolution to loose the 400 pounds of clotted lard I have put on my neck and knees over the past few months.

Thank you to all 4 of my readers who have stuck by me so far, and for the 1-2 more who perhaps have come on board now. If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend you read through some of the archives to begin building up your tolerance.

Reading this blog will make hair grow on the body parts you want it to, and fall out of the parts you don't. People in every check out lane will insist you go to the front of the line. Butterflies will flutter gently on your arms. It will prevent sharts.

Not really.

Running Over MS Again!

Here we go again -- it's time to get ready for my 5th City to Shore/MS 150 ride and this year I am more determined than ever to crush those 150 miles between Cherry Hill and Ocean City, New Jersey.

Every hour of every day, another American is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). It is often times a debilitating disease that comes out of nowhere to kick the crap out of your central nervous system. And once the jackwagon shows up, it never goes away. It's not genetic, it's not caused by having a great lifestyle (ie, drinking or smoking or McDonald's feasting), and it's not caused by any co-morbidities (other diseases). The punk just shows up--totally uninvited--and basically vomits all over your brain and spinal cord so your limbs go numb or you lose your vision or you're paralyzed. Oh and did I mention there is no cure? DAMN YOU MS!!!

So as you can see there are a lot of reasons to help the National MS Society in their mission to help find a cure and provide medical and lifestyle support to those all across the country who are living with MS.

And I would love to have your help, and here are some ways you can:

1. Join me on the ride September 28th & 29. Or if you can't ride, sign up to volunteer at the rest stops or cheer on the return riders in Ocean City or in Cherry Hill. There's food.

2. Drop some coin onto my fundraising page to help me meet my goal of raising $2,000.

3. Share the link to my fundraising page -- http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/ladystabson -- everywhere and often! Facebook, Twitter, blogs, emails, restroom stalls, etc.

Below are some examples of how donations to the MS Society are used:
  • $25 can provide yoga and exercise instruction or educational materials to people with MS.
  • $50 can provide transportation to an MS club or group meeting for someone with no means to get there.
  • $200 can pay for an occupational therapy home assessment for someone having difficulties with daily tasks around the house.
  • $300 can maintain the operation of an MS support group for an entire year.
  • $400 can pay for a driving assessment for someone needing vehicle modifications in order to remain independent in their community.
  • $500 can help pay the rent for a family affected by MS struggling to pay medical bills and other expenses.
  • $750 can help people with MS pay for chore services to help with tasks they can no longer handle because of the disease — like shoveling the driveway or meal preparation.
  • $2,000 can provide a scholarship to help a young person affected by MS pursue a college education.
THANK YOU for your support! xoxo

Intermission music

At some point I think I got drunk and smeared some smut on my Twitter feed about moving this blog into a podcast. Well if you and I missed it, I am officially declaring that it's gonna happen, baby. (Excuse me while I pour another bourbon slurry).

I plan to have it debut in June or July but most likely Junly. It will feature lots of cool stuff you'll have to wait until Mayune to hear about. I need to figure out what the fuck a podcast is first.

While I am eating all the podcast information I can throw down my jowls in the hopes of shitting out something listenable, I will leave you with musical entertainment provided by some of my very close friends who are awesome and already very listenable.

First up is my boy Matt who records and performs under the name Boy Pierce. I first met Matt back in 2007 when we worked at the same communications agency. He and I bonded over a mutual hatred of sayings like "low hanging fruit" and "having fun yet?"and seeing the voicemail light blinking first thing on a Monday morning. We also share a love of all kinds of music, and even though his music centers on dance/rap/hip-hop you can hear lot of shout outs to rock, pop, indie, and soul. Ever since I heard him do a freestyle rap during a happy hour at Las Vegas Lounge during $2 Yuengling night I was hooked.

Boy Pierce just released his 5th album, Various Dreams, which you can download FOR FREE here:

And you can check out his latest video for the single "Hindsight" here:

Next up -- one of my bessie friends from my teenage hooligan days of shenaniganry, Jeff, is in a band called The Lost Will Follow and I have really enjoyed watching him and his lovely band take-off in the Philly area from my couch. (Sorry Jeff for being a shit friend and only seeing yous guys play live once. I suck.) But from my couch I have been listening to their choons and you can hear them now too. They are a sexy force of South Jersey hard balls rock with none of that emo horseshit:

http://www.thelostwillfollow.com/Music.html

Here they are performing "I Don't Know" last month. Please note I am NOT the blonde hootchie momma dancing in a light-beer haze in front of the band.

You can also get lost and follow this fine chaps here (and tell Jeff what a shit friend I am): https://www.facebook.com/thelostwillfollow

And last, but certainly not least, my boyfriend Simon is on the verge of unleashing his latest project, called Shineback in the form of an album called Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed.  It will be available for listening, chewing, and gently caressing on July 1st. In the meantime, you can download the first single "Passengers" FOR FREE here:

And if you pre-order the album now, you will immediately receive a free download of the extra track "I Have Good Days, I Have Bad Days." I can tell you it's extra good and actually not so bad.

I have had the opportunity to listen to the entire album and I love it because it is truly a bi-partisan masterpiece. Prog fans will appreciate the ability to finally cast aside their dusty capes and shake their hot apple booties to some music that is truly progressive, while pop fans will have something much more meatier to chomp into than the usual over-produced noxious fumes pooted over today's airwaves.

And I'm not just saying that because the guy responsible for it all has a nice ass. Really.

More Shineback goodies can be pillaged at

So go play nice with my old dear friends who are now your new friends and watch out for Lady Stabson casting pods soon.

The More You Know: For the Ladies

Please spread the word. I will not rest until the world is rid of these kiddie fiddlers disguised as "boyfriends" and "husbands."

A High-Fiber Friendship

And now a word from Nicole.....

(PLEASE LISTEN UP OR I WILL PUNCH YOUR ASS. THANK YOU.)

Hello masses!

Nicole here. Long time listener, first time caller. I have had the honor of being Stacy’s heterosexual life-mate for 30 years. We have seen a lot of life together, starting with her Bert and Ernie record-player.  It was 1982, but we loved listening to Karen and Chuck’s records of the hits from 1950’s. Hold the phone, Lionel Richie; we’ll get to you after this dramatic dance interpretation of “Chantilly Lace”.  We would see each other through our girlhood crushes of Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz which would grow to an adulthood crush on just Michael Nesmith. In adolescence, we grew enamored with Chad Allen and Neil Patrick Harris. (Epic gaydar fail!) Sleepovers on Stacy’s waterbed of hell and almost dying in my Popples Sweatlodge tent. Skinning our knees on my family’s cement pool and Stacy’s family home in the country, where you would lose 5 pounds from the mosquitos sucking you dry. Our mutual codependency would grow ever stronger through hatred of itchy band uniforms, a love of slapstick and/or irreverent humor, and the delight of knowing each other’s mother thought the other one was a bad influence. (Yes, Karen, I KNOW.)  My older siblings to teach and tease us, Stacy’s younger siblings to torture and ignore.  Bad skin, bad teeth, nerd glasses. I can’t believe we weren’t more popular. We had our first jobs together, Stacy got me my job at Thrift Drug and together, we’d fight over who could do the least. And who would do the closing announcement on the PA. “Attention Thrift Drug shoppers, the time is now 9:15, the store will be closing…..”

But alas, it is our differences that make our friendship strong. Stacy is taller than me and she is a natural blond. I am petite and there is nothing natural about my hair color. Stacy likes nature and the Phillies. I think camping will give you hepatitis and find hiking the mall excellent cardio. Stacy would rather dive into a vat of razor blades than listen to Radiohead and most things emo, I would eat shards of broken glass before going near anything described as “prog”. But we both love Weird Al, novelty tees and gin*, so it always evens out in the end.

Stacy gets control of the juke-box tonight!

So many memories, delightfully brought up to embarrass one another in public situations. Yes, this is the stuff friendship is made of. There is a secret to keeping us close as we ever have been. We once killed a man. Just kidding, that is no secret. Actually, keeping our friendship strong requires a lot of upkeep. Emails, phone calls, waxing for those special occasions, texting and our favorite: G-Chat.
Is there anything nicer in the middle of a tough workday than a friendly hello, how are your bowels** from a friend? I think not. Although I was waiting for enough material for a coffee table book, here is a sneak peek. We hope you enjoy.

*and Bourbon. And Wine. And Beer. And Vodka. And Moonshine.
** Spoiler Alert-this is a major topic for us.

Nicole: Relax Your Sphincter
Stacy: HAHA
Nicole: also a dance club album
Stacy: added! so now it's a band, a song, and an album!
Nicole: ahhhh feels so good and is a dance move

And when we aren’t pretending we are in bands that are so much better sounding than your band, we sometimes talk about our jobs and even share current projects with each other. Here is just a sample of some of things we’ve been working on:

Please note we have major love feelings for those who get the Swill reference without having to look it up.  And while we’re at it, if you know Eddie the Flying Gimp we will have your babies.

So there you go. A friendship in a very nuttyshell. Here’s us 28 years ago. Haven’t aged a bit.

It's all a little bit mostly true sometimes but not really.
